The aims of Men-TOR are:
- To develop a resource specifically for men in Scotland which enables them to acquire advice, support, resources and skills in order to address, take responsibility for, and deal with, problems which they experience in their lives, and to deal with problems which they cause or contribute to, in the lives of other people.
- To develop a resource specifically for men that supports and assists and enables them to develop as men, fathers, partners, sons, brothers and friends.
- To develop the concepts and practices of mentoring, coaching and counselling in working with men.
- To develop a mentoring network which supports men in linking with supportive resources in their communities.
- To provide training in working with men from all ages and backgrounds on gender specific approaches to problems and issues which men encounter at various stages in their lives.
- To work with others on specific projects aimed at men’s social integration, and personal and social development.
- To work in collaboration and co-operation with women.
- To work in accordance with non / anti-discriminatory principles whilst acknowledging that for many men this is a developmental process.
- To deliver the Men-TOR Programme for men. This is a twin faceted group-work programme for men to engage in either on a voluntary or mandated basis. One aspect of the programme concentrates on men developing and nurturing a sense and pattern of behaving respectfully in relation to themselves. The other concentrates on them developing similar patterns of behaviour in relation to their relationships and dealings with others, namely their partners and children.
- Many of the problems which men experience in their lives are either ignored by them but usually come to the surface in ways which are damaging to themselves or to others.
Common problems included substance abuse, violence, having experienced abuse as a child; gambling; drug addiction; depression; work-related stress, relationship difficulties including being abusive in relationships, suicidal inclinations, unemployment, bereavement; separation and divorce, custody and access to children, etc.
